The Class of 1967 50 Year Reunion Lunch on Thursday 29th June 2017  was a particularly jolly affair with 9 Worthians and wives returning to tour the ‘Old Place’ and for a magnificent lunch in The Cowdray Room (or the Monks’ Refectory in their day).  There was a lovely buzz over lunch with the talk of antics and less than impressive school reports and the many changes to the campus, but all agreed that special essence of the place is still very much present!

The Channel Swim Reunion Supper at Worth on Saturday 17th June 2017 was a fabulous occasion as the School celebrated the wonderful achievements of all students who have swum the Channel since 2009, as well as toasting the 2017 team ahead of their challenge. Even more incredible when you realise they have raised £70,000 for charity in that time. It was great to have 23 Worthian team members from across those years joining us.

The Worth Community were honoured to host the Episcopal Ordination of Fr John MacWilliam (StB’67) as Bishop of Laghouat, Algeria in the Abbey Church on Saturday 20th May 2017.  With some of Fr John’s Worthian contemporaries from 50 years ago joining many current students in the congregation it was a very proud day for Worth.

The Cavalry & Guards Club was the perfect venue for our 1960s/70s Decade Reunion Dinner on Thursday 4th May 2017.  Over 100 Worthians, spanning 1963 to 1979 Leavers, joined ‘Three Wise Abbots’ and other former staff for pre-dinner drinks, hosted by Worth Society, followed by a delicious 3-course dinner overlooking Green Park.  Many were amazed at the youthfulness of the ‘old staff’ which was put down to the Worth air.  With some guests touching base again after up to 47 years, everyone went home on a wonderful wave of Worthian nostalgia.

Our annual Careers Networking Evening was held on Thursday 6h April 2017 at the buzzing new wine-bar, The Refinery, New Street Square EC4.  An eclectic mix of Worthian professionals came along to advise some recent leavers who were seeking advice about particular careers. One Worthian in particular thanked the Society for putting on a ‘buffet of lawyers’.

Our annual St Benedict’s Day Mass at St Mary Moorfields Church in the City of London on 22nd March 2017 became a poignant gathering to not only remember deceased Worthians, but also those that had been killed and injured in the Westminster Bridge terror attack that afternoon. Fr Christopher Jamison and Fr Mark Barrett presided and with beautiful music played by celebrated Worth Abbey organist, D’Arcy Trinkwon, and sung by a Worthian Choir, it was a very moving ceremony.  The 50 or so who attended then all piled downstairs into the Parish Centre to be treated to lashings of meatballs and pasta cooked by Worthian restaurateurs, Belpassi Bros (Livio & Lorenzo B’04) and wine provided by the Worth Society.

On 14th & 17th April 2016, the Worth Estate opened its gates to the public for the first time as part of the National Garden Scheme (NGS).  With over 1350 people through the gates and beautiful Spring weather, the whole event was a huge success and raised just under £6,000 for the NGS Charities.  It was lovely to greet some Worthians with their families who came along to do the Woodland Walk and have a complimentary tea in The Cowdray Room.

On Tuesday 5th April 2016 the Society held its annual mass to celebrate St Benedict’s Day at St Mary Moorfields Church, 4-5 Eldon Street, London EC2. What an evening the 1970-79 Leavers’ Reunion proved to be!  It took place on Thursday 16th May 2013 in the Mountbatten Room at the RAC in Pall Mall, London.  We welcomed a magnificent 95 Worthians, former staff members and Monks to this very special evening arranged for Worthians who left Worth School during the 1970s.  The evening positively hummed and the e-mails have been flooding in since – this one received from Anthony Morrissey (R’74) is very typical of the overall spirit and sentiment expressed by those who joined us : ”I wanted to drop you a line to say thank you for organising such a great evening on Thursday. You could sense how much everyone was enjoying themselves, and that was a testament to both the natural good humour and friendly disposition of Worthians.  To be honest I had not planned on going to the dinner originally as it’s not generally ‘my sort of thing’, but when I saw the list of my contemporaries who had accepted, it made it much easier to sign up.  In fact I’d love to see them all again when perhaps we all reach the dreaded age of 60 – I suppose at least we’ll all be in the same boat!”  Click here to see the List of Attendees.

2012 : Revisiting Worth 60 Years On!

The Jubilee Jamboree took place at Worth School on the afternoon of Saturday 26th May 2012 to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.  Organised by the Friends of Worth, the event brought together the whole School community for a giant street party-style day – with traditional attractions, high octane rides, a hog roast, barbeque and a host of family-friendly stalls for all to enjoy.  In the embryonic stages of the event’s organisation, it was decided that the day wouldn’t be complete without the presence of Worthians who attended Worth Prep School in 1952 and 1953 – covering both the year the Queen ascended the throne and her Coronation – and we had the joy of welcoming 25 Prep School Worthians, for a truly remarkable and memorable reunion event which we hosted in the Cowdray Room at Worth School.  “The greatly anticipated day of the Worth Jubilee Jamboree dawned as a wonderful  bright summer’s day, and the excitement mounted as noon approached and the guests arrived to see the huge preparations that had been made … …” read more.  Click here to see List of Attendees.
