Worthians Football

Welcome to the Worthians Football area of the website.

The sun welcomed the team of Under-21 Worthians on the last Sunday of the Lent Term when they arrived at Worth to play football against the School 1st X1.  Having already been postponed twice because of inclement weather (namely copious quantities of snow!) the players were well ready for this keenly contested match.

We saw a number of nations taking part - and it was good to see Germany and Italy represented in the Worthians team.  Names like Klipper and Belpassi rolled off the tongue, as we remembered that it is a World Cup year.

Thanks to the International Baccalaureate, we have seen a renewed interest in, and enthusiasm for, football at Worth.  We are indebted to Nick Hopkins for agreeing to arrange the Worthians team for a second year and a third time.

The match was closely contested.  The School secured victory, winning the match 3-1; although there were accusations that the referee was a ‘homey' (honestly!).  Stef Humphries scored for the Worthians, while Pablo Wansborough scored two and Chris Gyere one for the School.  That ended a very good season for Pablo, who was the 1st X1s leading goal scorer - just ahead of Chris who was last season's leading scorer.

The teams were playing for the Henry Surtees Memorial Cup, which was presented to Matt Jeffery, the School Team Captain, by the Headmaster in the final Assembly of term.  We hope that next year a number of boys from Henry's group of 2009 Leavers will play against the 1st X1, and to invite John Surtees to present the Cup after the match.  This will be housed in a trophy cabinet in the new Café - to be called the Pit Stop in Henry's memory.

After the match and over a few beers in the Patrick Lamb Centre, there was talk of holding two matches next year on the penultimate Sunday of the Lent Term - with an Under-21 as well as an Over-21 Worthians team playing versus the School.

It's about time that Football is given the recognition it deserves, and with so many Worthians showing an interest, I am sure we have started something that will become part of the Worthians sporting Calendar in the years to come.

Once again, thank you to those Worthians who participated, and to the School for securing  the Cup!
