2017 Events

What a fabulous start to Christmas with St Patrick’s Soho Square packed full with Worthians, their families and friends all singing heartily at our London Carol Service on 6th December 2017.  Accompanied by the School Choir, with many former choristers joining them, and organist D’Arcy Trinkwon, the music was magical.  Mulled wine, mince pies and canapés followed served by Worth Catering Staff who were delighted to see many former students.

James Madsen C’77 did a fantastic job of getting 36 Worthians together from the Class of 1977 for their 40 Year Reunion on Saturday 11th November 2017 at the Cavalry & Guards Club,  supported by Frs Kevin & Stephen, Keith Owers and Martin Powyss-Lybb as honorary guests.

A Dinner for Worthians based in Hong Kong was held at The China Club on Saturday 21st October 2017. 13 Worthians from across the decades joined Worth School’s Deputy Head, Gordon Pearce for an excellent evening.

The Class of 1997 2o Year Reunion was held at Ball Brothers Victoria on Saturday 21st October 2017.  With nearly 30 attending including an impressive collection of 5 former staff members it was a great gathering.

We hosted a magnificent number of over 50 Worthians for the Worth Prep School (1933-1965) Reunion on Thursday 21st September 2017. With some former pupils having attended as far back as the 1930s it was quite a big trip down memory lane. A small group had actually spent 10 of their formative years at Worth having moved from the Prep School into the newly formed Senior School and now wish to be know as the 10 Year Club!  Former matrons, Tigs Sacre and Helen Sweetman joined the party. Many commented that some things at Worth had remained unchanged, luckily the lunch they all enjoyed was much better than the ones they had remembered!

The Class of 1987 held a gathering for their 30 Year Reunion at The Phene pub in Chelsea Friday 15th September.

The sun shone down on Fr Stephen Ortiger as he celebrated his 50 glorious golden years as a priest at his Golden Jubilee Mass in the Abbey Church on Saturday 19th August 2017.  He was immensely touched to have many Worthians from across the decades joining him on his special day.

The Class of 1967 50 Year Reunion Lunch on Thursday 29th June 2017  was a particularly jolly affair with 9 Worthians and wives returning to tour the ‘Old Place’ and for a magnificent lunch in The Cowdray Room (or the Monks’ Refectory in their day).  There was a lovely buzz over lunch with the talk of antics and less than impressive school reports and the many changes to the campus, but all agreed that special essence of the place is still very much present!

The Channel Swim Reunion Supper at Worth on Saturday 17th June 2017 was a fabulous occasion as the School celebrated the wonderful achievements of all students who have swum the Channel since 2009, as well as toasting the 2017 team ahead of their challenge. Even more incredible when you realise they have raised £70,000 for charity in that time. It was great to have 23 Worthian team members from across those years joining us.

The Worth Community were honoured to host the Episcopal Ordination of Fr John MacWilliam (StB’67) as Bishop of Laghouat, Algeria in the Abbey Church on Saturday 20th May 2017.  With some of Fr John’s Worthian contemporaries from 50 years ago joining many current students in the congregation it was a very proud day for Worth.

The Cavalry & Guards Club was the perfect venue for our 1960s/70s Decade Reunion Dinner on Thursday 4th May 2017.  Over 100 Worthians, spanning 1963 to 1979 Leavers, joined ‘Three Wise Abbots’ and other former staff for pre-dinner drinks, hosted by Worth Society, followed by a delicious 3-course dinner overlooking Green Park.  Many were amazed at the youthfulness of the ‘old staff’ which was put down to the Worth air.  With some guests touching base again after up to 47 years, everyone went home on a wonderful wave of Worthian nostalgia.

Our annual Careers Networking Evening was held on Thursday 6th April 2017 at the buzzing new wine-bar, The Refinery, New Street Square EC4.  An eclectic mix of Worthian professionals came along to advise some recent leavers who were seeking advice about particular careers. One Worthian in particular thanked the Society for putting on a ‘buffet of lawyers’.

Our annual St Benedict’s Day Mass at St Mary Moorfields Church in the City of London on 22nd March 2017 became a poignant gathering to not only remember deceased Worthians, but also those that had been killed and injured in the Westminster Bridge terror attack that afternoon. Fr Christopher Jamison and Fr Mark Barrett presided and with beautiful music played by celebrated Worth Abbey organist, D’Arcy Trinkwon, and sung by a Worthian Choir, it was a very moving ceremony.  The 50 or so who attended then all piled downstairs into the Parish Centre to be treated to lashings of meatballs and pasta cooked by Worthian restaurateurs, Belpassi Bros (Livio & Lorenzo B’04) and wine provided by the Worth Society.
